Robert Rice – Blogger Week

Curious Raven -  http://curiousraven.squarespace.com/

robert_rice_bwSociosophy:  “What was the reason you started to blog? What keeps you going?”

Robert Rice:  “I needed an outlet for my opinion or a method to give my voice a forum. Sometimes it is hard being an entrepreneur on the east coast, and missing out on a lot of social events and activities that happen in the West. The blog is one of the channels I have to get exposure, passively seek and connect with like-minded people, and rant about things that bug me.”

Rice is nothing short of brilliant, and when it comes to technology… Well, let’s just say he was into technology before technology was this bubbly pretty universe we all know as Vista and OS/X. He’s been working in and around virtual reality, internet gaming, and virtual simulation for (over) 17 years.

I don’t know about you, but 17 years ago, I was happy to have a hard drive and a modem, let alone graphics on my monitor. He’s also author of the book MMO Evolution (look), does the whole speaking in front of large crowds about awesome stuff – thing, and technology aside, have a look at his hobbies:

Photography, tenor saxophone, haiku, Kyudo (Japanese archery), fencing (foil and epee), world travel, reading, world history, archaeology, paleontology, philosophy, theology, cryptography, architecture, sociology, psychology, robotics, anime, and a dozen or so other topics. I love creating things, learning, and exploring.

Alright, so – his blog features posts about whatever catches his attention, his writing style is creatively methodical, and he gives great insights into things other than his professional interests. To me, that’s what makes a thinking blogger great.

Here’s how our virtual interview went with Robert:

Socisophy, “How many hours a week do you spend thinking about blog posts and writing?”

Robert,  “I probably spend an hour or two a day in total thinking about it. I rarely get the chance to actually draft anything and post it though.”

Sociosophy, “If you could change one thing about your blog, what would it be?”

Robert,  “Aside from more traffic and user comments, I’d change the frequency of my posts.”

Sociosophy, “What’s your favorite Social Media outlet other than your blog?”

Robert, “Twitter, without a doubt.”

Sociosophy, “Do you think Twitter and FriendFeed contribute or take away from your blogging?”

Robert, “Twitter is definitely a HUGE contributor. When I need feedback, commentary, or if I have a post that I would really like to get “on the radar” twitter is incredible for quick response. Even better the power of the network (retweets) have a significant impact on overall traffic and keeping a topic alive.”
