Clipta
Video, it’s the wave of the Internet’s future, or rather, a huge part in it. Outside of torrents, blogs, news and porn, the Internet is good for two things, Twitter and video. So to have an aggregating video search engine at your fingertips seems like a pretty useul thing to have, if you’re not trying to compete with “The Google”, anyhow.
Clipta is a video-centric search engine that looks everyone media to find results you want. Their interface might as well have just used the same CSS file from YouTube for their player page, but the search is pretty good, I was able to track down the Numa Numa guy doing the new Geiko-powered… whatever song that is in the commercials with the creepy money guy… and play it right on the site.
What do they got?
- Search for videos from multiple sites
- Rate a video up
- Describe and comment
- Clipta-centric social network
- A pretty sweet News section idea: http://news.clipta.com/
- Some other sections, I’m not too sure about (looks like Celebrity news, let’s here it for SEO)
- Related videos for page-viewing goodness
I liked that it was a familiar interface, which might be unfair of me to say that their player page is a rip off from the YouTube wireframe, I don’t even know the guys who made the site, could be YouTube themselves that created this Google Video competition just for grins after someone made a bet at a party, regardless – the site’s clean. There are a few thigns it could do without, but I’m sure they’ll get through those UI features and make it pretty.
I’d say they could do away with the social networking aspects of the site, clear off some of the calls-to-action, and make this site lightweight awesome and take Google Video on a run for their wallets (to buy them up). It’s a good idea, it’s not new, but it’s done pretty well anyhow.
